Let me say something that might sound strange coming from someone giving away a weekly meal plan template: I do not like meal planning.

I've always been a cook-how-I-feel kind of woman. Open the fridge, see what's calling my name, make it work. That was fine when it was just me. Then I became a wife and a busy mom on a budget, and "I'll figure it out at 5 p.m." started costing us real money. Takeout, random grocery runs, and half a head of lettuce wilting in the back of the fridge.

So I started planning. Not because I love it, but because it's the thing that actually helped me stick to our budget. Honestly, it's been a game changer.

Why I made my own weekly meal plan template

There are some great apps out there. I like eMeals when I want the recipes handed to me, and AnyList is great for a shared grocery list the whole family can add to.

But most days, I want to grab a pen and write it down. It's quick, there's no login, and I can see my whole week without tapping through a screen. I searched for a weekly meal plan template I liked and found plenty, but nothing that felt right. So I made my own. I figured if they help me, they might help you too.

What's in the free download

You get four pages, because we don't all plan the same way:

  • Day-by-Day Row Planner: Sunday through Saturday down the page, with columns for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and notes. There's also a spot for a weekly intention.
  • Weekly Planner (Day-by-Column): Each day gets its own column so you can see the whole week spread out. It has a "This Week's Focus" sidebar, a weekly goal, and notes.
  • Meal Plan + shopping list printable on One Page: Your seven days of meals on the left, your grocery list on the right with item, quantity, and aisle. One page, done.
  • Standalone grocery list printable: A full-page grocery list printable sorted into nine categories (produce, meat and fish, dairy, bakery, frozen, pantry, drinks, household, and other), with checkboxes.

It's an earthy palette of terracotta, sage, and dusty amber on a clean white background. It's easy on your ink and cute enough to leave on the counter. Everything is a US Letter PDF and starts on Sunday, because that's how most of us think about our week anyway.

How to use it so it actually sticks

Here's what works for me, and I'm the girl who doesn't like planning:

  1. Check what you already have first. Look through the fridge and pantry before you write a single meal on your weekly mean plan template. This alone saves me money.
  2. Plan dinners first. Breakfast and lunch tend to repeat. Dinner is where we get stuck.
  3. Write your grocery list as you plan. The all-in-one page makes this easy, and the aisle column keeps you from zigzagging the store.
  4. Plan for leftovers. Taco night turning into burrito bowls the next day counts as a win.
  5. Leave one night open. Life happens. Mine usually says "leftovers or breakfast for dinner."

What I print these on

I print at home on regular copy paper, and a good ream makes a difference because thin paper shows through when you write with pens. I like Hammermill copy paper for everyday printing. If I want a planner page to survive a month on the fridge, I'll use heavier cardstock instead.

If you'd rather reuse one page week after week, slide it into a sheet protector and write on it with a dry-erase marker. You can wipe it clean on Sunday and start fresh.

You can also use the PDFs digitally. They open in Adobe Acrobat Reader, GoodNotes, Notability, or any PDF app, so if you're an iPad-and-Apple-Pencil person, you're covered.
